CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE UNITED KINGDOM
A critical perspective on contemporary architecture in the United Kingdom and its emerging themes and preoccupations.
Contemporary Architecture United Kingdom is the first title in Artifice books on architecture's new Contemporary Architecture series. The series focuses on specific territories worldwide and offers engaging, challenging and inspiring surveys of contemporary architecture in each region. In keeping with Black Dog Publishing s ART WORLD series thus far comprising books on Contemporary Art in the Middle East, Latin America, the United Kingdom, North America and Eastern Europe each book in the Contemporary Architecture series will include key re-published texts by historians, critics and practitioners, as well as new specially commissioned contextualising essays concerning the architecture comprising each title in the series.
Contemporary Architecture United Kingdom features the work of more than 50 architects from the United Kingdom including Nord, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, Richard Murphy Architects, Haworth Tompkins, Eric Parry Architects and Sarah Wigglesworth Architects. Every building type, from large public institutions to private houses, is covered along with a wide range of design approaches relating to preoccupations as diverse as materials, processes, climate and the environment, economics, and history and theory. Together, the series will enable cross-cultural comparisons and establish common and divergent concerns given each region, in contrast to the emerging phenomena of 'globalisation' and the focus on singular 'iconic' architecture works.
In 2011 Duncan McCorquodale co-founded Artifice books on architecture, also based in London. First and foremost dedicated to the promotion, distribution and sales of architecture titles Artifice books on architecture is also a new imprint under which smaller, more bespoke publications are produced, enabling the continuation of the publication of major monographs and theoretical books on contemporary architecture as well as the type of responsive, creative titles with which BDP first made its name as an independent publishing house nearly 20 years ago. He has edited over 100 books including Desiring Practices, Colin St John Wilson, Architects Year Book Symposium, Eric Parry Architects 1+2 and The Third Typology and Other Essays.
