Sports facilities come with a strict set of rules for a designer. The games themselves are governed by carefully laid out regulations. Where some sports, such as football describe minimum and maximum pitch sizes and allow a little flexibility, others define dimensions more rigidly and go beyond only specifying horizontal measurements. Includes projects by Barbosa & Guimarães Arquitectos (the Povoação Municipal Pools on the Azores), Comte & Vollenweider Architectes (the Cannes Tennis Club), Garmendia Arquitectos (Barakaldo Sports Hall), ACXT Architects (Bilboa Arena and Sports Center in Miribilla). This issue also contains a special on rooftop terraces and penthouses with projects by JDS Architects, Andrew Maynard Architects, Room & Room, Studio d’ARC Architects and FREAKS freeachitects.
