The preservation of a historically significant building sometimes clashes with the need to change its use. This issue explores a particular architectural solution, one that preserves the existing structure while extending it within the vertical. The resulting hybrid offers an intriguing interface between old and new, as seen in Herzog & de Meuron’s recently opened Elbphilharmonie, Zaha Hadid’s Port House in Antwerp, and Matrera Castle by Carquero Arquitectura.
