In the broadest sense, a retreat is a place where one can sequester oneself from what is considered to be the standard mode of dwelling. Architecture must often produce living spaces that are impermanent, that are infrequently inhabited, or that can be relocated if necessary. This issue features eleven habitations that perform such functions; spaces at the edge of dwelling, from hotels and weekend cabins, to shelters in nature and even a restaurant. Included are works by OFIS Arhitekti, Bureau A, and Olson Kundig Architects. The magazine also examines the concept of meditation in architecture through two chapels, a contemplative centre, and a Japanese temple.
