This monograph brings together the best of the last two decades of production by the North American studio Allied Works, founded by Brad Cloepfil in Oregon in 1994.
The name of the studio is an affirmation of architecture understood, not as an isolated discipline, but as a conversation between diverse creative practices that inspire unique and individual responses.
In their essay “Sitings” they reflect on the state of architectural practice and defend the idea of a sensitive architecture, which finds its power in the amplification of the forces that inhabit a place. Culture, topography, light, climate, and plant life are those forces that give buildings lasting meaning.
His first big project was an adaptive reuse of a Portland warehouse for the Wieden + Kennedy advertising agency.
Since then, Allied Works have completed cultural, commercial, and residential projects, including the St. Louis Museum of Contemporary Art, the University of Michigan Art Museum, and the Clyfford Still Museum.
This book comes at its best, showing, after more than 25 years of efforts, what we want architecture to be: sustainable, transformable and capable of creating community.
More than 300 pages with 14 projects developed at the level of texts, images, drawings and construction details.
It also includes objects, conceptual drawings, or models, understood as explorations of thought to scale that are precursors to construction.
